Karaoke: why the volume of microphone is so low through my computer speaker

Assume you bought a nice microphone for Karaoke (not those crap computer microphones used for web chat), you realize that the plug doesn’t fit into the 3.5” hole on the sound card, so you bought an adapter, but the volume of microphone is so low through my computer speaker. However those crap computer microphones have louder sound. What happened?

Solution?

1. You need a sound mixer to amplify the output and RCA to 3.5” Y cable to connect mixer to sound card input

2. Or you can buy a USB microphone. USB microphone actually has built-in sound card, but there are some limitations such as you can’t easily connect to microphones to the computer.

3. Microphone output over HDMI or optical? You have to look for more expensive sound card with “DTS Interactive” or “Dolby Digital Live”

LG 42LB5D Tips

here are the steps

1 - prepare a empty USB flash drive.

2 - create a folder in the flash drive called "LG_DTV" (yes with the underscroll too)

3 - visit: http://us.lgservice.com/vchip_html/V-chip_upgrade_for_your_set.html

4 - right click on "42LB5DF-UC"(or whatever your model is) and click on "save target as" and save the file under your flash drive in the folder "LG_DTV".

5 - safely remove your flash drive from your pc.

6 - turn the television set off.

7 - insert the flash drive in the side of the TV

8 - turn the television set back on.

9 - you should see a menu within 20 seconds giving you two options to start or cancel.

10 - if you don’t have the latest firmware hit start.

11 - then follow the instructions on the screen. mine just told me to wait till the TV restarts and remove the flash drive.

There is another menu you can access. Hold the Menu button down until the password screen appears. Then punch in 8741 as the password. Now you have access to "Expert mode". This will give you two "Expert Mode" settings (Expert Mode 1 and Expert Mode 2) that will now show up in your picture settings. You can select the input that you want to apply these settings to.

1) Hold down the Menu button on the remote till a password screen shows
2) Keep holding the button, now press and hold the menu button on the TV and the service menu will eventually display.
This menu seems to change from a full version to an abbreviated version every other time you do the above procedure.

Once in, there are many options and most could lead to a brick for a TV.

ATI Catalyst Control Center setting for 1080P display on TV with HDMI cable

I have a trouble to make 1080P display correctly on my LG 42LB5D for a year. I tried several combinations in TV setting and ATI Catalyst Control Center setting (The video card is ATI HD4350) and still can’t set correctly until I found a solution recently. There are two issues for the 1080P display on LG 42LB5D.

1. The desktop area on TV is shrunken when I switch to 1080P on ATI CCC. The desktop does not fill up the entire screen via HDMI. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11058517#post11058517

2. The blurred image with really defined highlights around everything. Following is the screen shot borrowed from http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=454949

The solution is actually very simple.

1. Set HDMI label as “PC” on LG 42LB5D Options --> Input Label --> PC Several people mentioned that will help.

2. Fix the shrunken desktop area by adjust the underscan/overscan value on ATI CCC. The version I am using is 10.11. Check http://www.aoclarkejr.com/ati-catalyst-9-9-overcan-and-underscan-options.html and http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=1039507. I have to move the slider to full overscan so that the desktop can fill whole screen.

3. Fix blurred image. Click “Pixel Format” tab on above dialog. I changed the value from YCrbr to RGB.

Notes:

• Someone mentioned changing the refresh rate from 60Hz to 75Hz can also fix the issue, but I can’t figure out a way on ATI CCC to override refresh rate. Maybe the ATI Tray Tools can help, but I haven’t try it.
• I have download the Catalyst Software Suite which includes ATI display driver, ATI CCC and ATI HDMI sound driver. The ATI HDMI sound driver is more useful if you have surround sound system. In my setting, the HDMI cable is connected from ATI video card to TV and a optical cable is connected from TV to surround sound system. The HDMI sound driver from ATI works perfectly to pass THX, DTS sound through HDMI cable. The Realtek website (the motherboard of my machine has its integrated sound card) also has a ATI HDMI sound driver which doesn’t pass the sound correctly if I play DVD on my computer.
• Another tweak mentioned in avsforum. Some models of LG42LB5D have the "just scan feature". for example, October 2007 build. On page 27 of TV manual, under "on-screen menus selection", it describes "setup", and then "picture", and to the right of "picture", it has listed Picture Mode, Color Temperature, XD, and so forth, and includes Aspect Ratio. To the right of Aspect Ratio, it lists the options, and one of the options listed is "Just Scan". Now is that not in other people's manuals with earlier builds?

Free or discount parking in Waikiki

3/11/2009 K "808 Food Enthusiast" K. says: At the Waikiki Banyan it used to be $5 or $7 for 24 hours.  Not sure if they still have that price.  If you're planning on parking on the street overnight yeah you have to be careful of the parking rules and break in.

3/11/2009 Gidget T. says: I always park at the Zoo when I'm going to Waikiki.  It's $0.25 an hour, but you can only feed the meter for four hours at a time.  Still, it's the best place to park (that I've found) in Waikiki.

3/12/2009 Gidget T. says: Pete... you could park overnight at the Zoo, in theory, if you were willing to come back and feed the meter every 4 hours.  But, if not, the meter would run out and they are pretty quick giving out tickets.  It's pretty well policed.  For that reason, I feel safe parking my car there at night if I go out to Waikiki with friends.  For overnight parking, you're probably better off paying the extra money to secure an overnight stall at a hotel :(

3/13/2009 Mark "who am I to judge" G. says: Parking at Ala Moana is not a bad idea.  With DUI road blocks at almost every artery outside of Waikiki it's a pretty good idea even if you just plan to go into Waikiki for the an evening.   I recall reading a review in Yelp about a hotel at the zoo end of Waikiki that was not a really nice hotel but they did have cheap parking ala 9/day.  I wish I could have found that review for you.  My suggestion would be to spend the parking money on a taxi and when you need a car call Enterprise to pick you up.  Don't forget about The Bus, especially for going to places like Ala Moana Shopping Center or the Arizona Memorial.

4/15/2009 Pete "Dance Central BBOY" S. says: No, you do NOT have to be a resident of the Banyan to purchase the pass. What they do is they give you a ticket that is date stamped on the back along with your license plate number. Then also write your license plate number on a clipboard so that you don't get your car towed. You put that ticket on the lower left side of the window by your VIN number and that's it. Every time you pull into the garage by the stop sign, they check it. Sometimes on the way out, they check it. I did notice the EWA hotel that's close by is also doing a $10 parking. I took a picture of that but I haven't had the time to upload it. Oh, If you want to go the cheaper route, you can do this. Parking along the streets of Paoakalani and the other streets that are metered are only from 7-6pm. After that, you can park your car at the meter areas without putting in change. Sooo....if you have all the time in the world there, you can probably park at the zoo during the day time and then park at the street (if you can find a spot) in the night time. Also, if you just keep going on Kalakaua, you will eventually end up in the park that has no meters. Some people on Yelp didn't recommend parking there but that was originally my backup plan. I've checked the area and tho there is homeless that lingers around, I don't think your car would be in any harm if you don't leave valuables and if you move your car every day. This would also be a cheap alternative to parking at the Banyan.  If you have a lot to carry in and out of the hotel room, I would just pay for the garage, it would save you a bit of time.

4/16/2009 W "Bikeman" K. says: There is cheap 24 hour parking in the Diamond Parking lot at the Ala Wai boat harbor near the Ilikai and Hilton Grand Waikikian at other end of Waikiki (from Ala Moana, turn south on Hobron, then west onto Holomoana Street, go around the curve and look on for blue signs that say "Paid Parking").    It costs $0.25 per hour, patrolled around the clock but leave nothing inside you car.  Cash only in a machine in blocks of 1-6,8,12,24 hours; no change given.  Be sure to put the ticket on your dashboard.  There are also some free, hard to get day-time spaces for recreational and harbor users; you'll get towed if you leave car overnight.  Bus line goes right along Ala Moana.

Waikiki has affordable parking spaces, but drivers have to know where to look

Parking stalls in Waikiki are a mirage.

You drive toward what looks like an empty stall only to find a moped or a small sports car parked in the spot.

There's a trick to it, said Rick Egged, president of the Waikiki Improvement Association.

If you know where to look, you can find affordable public parking at hotels and shopping centers in and around Waikiki without driving around for hours.

"Waikiki has more parking than you think, Egged said. "If you eat and shop here, most likely you can park for free."

His association has partnered with some hotels and shopping complexes to come up with "holoholo parking," affordable parking with rates starting at $1 per hour. This is to supplement the municipal parking lots.

Here are some of the parking options in Waikiki.

Free or metered parking

Along the Ala Wai Canal, about 180 stalls.

Random locations on the side streets of Waikiki.

Waikiki Zoo lot, 217 parking stalls including eight handicap stalls.

Kuhio lot, 65 metered stalls including three handicap.

Holoholo parking (Cheap parking at hotels)

Ohana East, 150 Kaiulani Ave., 238 stalls. $1 per hour for a maximum of five hours.

King Kalakaua Plaza, 2080 Kalakaua Ave., 195 stalls. $1 per hour for a maximum of five hours.

Radisson Waikiki Prince Kuhio, 190 stalls. $1 per hour for a maximum of five hours.

Waikiki Trade Center, 400 stalls.

Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, 590 stalls. Open only during big events in Waikiki, $1 per hour for a maximum of five hours.

Waikiki Parking Garage, 333 Seaside Ave., 336 stalls. $6 flat daily rate.

Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki hotel.

Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki.

Free And Cheap Waikiki Parking

I don’t like paying $20 or more for overnight parking in Waikiki.  While hotel parking used to be quite inexpensive here, it’s edging up towards the unreasonable.  With the car rental bargains available, it’s easy to spend more on the parking than on the car itself.

We’ve found free parking available 24 hours a day along Montserrat Avenue, which is off of Kalakau just beyond Kapahulu.

There’s also unlimited free parking in the lot next to the Waikiki Shell, just off Montserrat.  We park here overnight.

The Honolulu Zoo, on Kapahulu, just off of Kalakaua, has 24 hour metered marking, for just 25 cents an hour.  It’s closely monitored so don’t forget to bring your quarters and watch your time.

Nearer to central Waikiki is the Waikiki Banyan Hotel (on ‘Ohua Street), which charges $10 per day or $60 per week for unlimited parking with in/out privileges.

Near Ala Moana.

There is still free parking along the Ala Wai Canal, on Ala Wai Boulevard.  We’ve heard rumors, however, that this may change to metered parking soon. Read more at beatofhawaii.com
